Notary Public Services and Fees

The Town Clerk's office in Monroe offers Notary Public Services. Both the Town Clerk and the Assistant Town Clerks serve in this capacity. The Notary Public is a public official appointed by the Secretary of the State through the power vested in the Secretary by state law. The Notary has the power to administer oaths, take acknowledgments and perform other duties as permitted by law.

We offer the following services:

  • We can administer an oath
  • We can take acknowledgements
  • We can take an affidavit

This service is provided free to Monroe residents and a $5.00 fee for non-residents for each notary act.

However, there are certain statutory requirements necessary before we can do the above.

YOU MUST:

  1. Be personally known to us; or
  2. Show absolute proof as to your identity by showing any two of the following:
    Driver's License or other Photo ID, or physical description of the signer
  3. Not acceptable forms are ID are Birth Certificate AND Social Security Card

BECAUSE OF THE LEGAL REQUIREMENTS, PLEASE DO NOT ASK US TO NOTARIZE:

  1. A conveyance of land or property 
  2. A will-health, living or general wills
  3. Birth, death or marriage certificates not on file in our office
  4. Anything, from anyone, who is not appearing before us in person

Please remember that we must observe the law and the legally required standard of "Reasonable Care" to protect all parties involved. Consequently, we do reserve the right to modify these services as necessary. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

The following are fees necessary for recording Notaries Public once they receive their commissions.

Original commission of notary public must be recorded in the town of residence of the notary and additionally may be recorded in the town or towns in which the notary does business.

Documents being sent to certain countries may need the apostils or authentication of the Secretary of the State in addition to that of the town clerk.
